Reports: Jenkins has the edge

According to a few sources, junior QB Max Jenkins looks to be in line to win the backup spot to Trent Steelman this fall.

The Times Herald-Record reported Tuesday that Jenkins had most likely edged senior QB Chip Bowden for the role. The Houston, Texas native entered preseason camp listed third on depth chart — his brother started for Louisiana Tech last fall at QB.

Jenkins was also the quarterback during Army’s second offensive series in Friday’s scrimmage.

Nothing is official, yet, though — a final roster should be available in the coming week leading up to the season opener on Sept. 4.

Bowden is coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL in his knee and continues to wear a brace. He was held out of practice briefly two weeks ago but played in last Saturday’s scrimmage.

Are there still concerns about Bowden’s knee holding up? Co-defensive coordinator Payam Saadat spoke Friday about the team’s health in general:

“We have to stay healthy. The first team is good. The first team is a great bunch of guys,” Saadat said. “They have to fight to stay healthy, and they have to fight to keep their minds right. That’s huge. We have to make sure we help them with that and teach them how to do that week to week.”

Army wore its new road white uniform during a scrimmage this week, there’s a photo gallery here (not my photos) to see what they look like.

According to West Point, K Matt Campbell, senior DE/LS Carson Homme and senior DB L.B. Brown will serve as captains at EMU next weekend along with Stephen Anderson. Army will wear the 1st Infantry Division unit patch on the right shoulder of its jersey for that game as well (as seen in the gallery).
