Hanney commits to Wagner

Need to show some love to Nanuet’s own Tom Hanney, the senior quarterback who led my old high school to the New York State championship game this past fall. Hanney, who also played safety for Nanuet, committed to Wagner College last week and is expected to play linebacker.

Consider this an excuse to show off some of my cool photos of Hanney covered in mud and generally kicking ass for the Knights.

Nanuet again trashed Pearl River to claim the Little Brown Jug this past year, which is like Yankees-Red Sox in these two towns. Nanuet was fairly excited:

On Hanney — he’s a beast. Scruffy, emotional, had the mohawk going for most of this season. He’d lead the team to a touchdown and then come right back on the field and dominate on defense. Big, strong guy and I wish him good luck. I remember telling Nanuet athletic director Frank Mazzuca (my old assistant principal) about Hanney, especially on defense, and he’d tell me, “Tom loves to hit.” Surprising he’s going to suddenly be a linebacker, but whatever.

Also a shameless plug here to one of my photos, or rather, my opportunity to wish good luck to another good guy, Dallas McPherson, who’s missed a lot of time the past several seasons with injuries. Dallas was invited to camp this spring with Oakland and will compete for a backup spot I’m guessing. He had a big season in 2008, so hopefully he catches on somewhere.
