Stephen Anderson, one of Army’s captains for the last two seasons, announced the permanent captains for the remainder of the year today.
“Last week, as a team, we chose our team captains for the remainder of the year,” Anderson said Monday. “With five games left, Josh McNary, Patrick Mealy, and Carson Homme will be joining me as the formal leaders and captains of the Army Football Team.”
Army and head coach Rich Ellerson announced during the summer pre-season camp that the team would have rotating captains for each game, with several players joining Anderson wearing the “C” for half the year before voting on permanent selections.
“I have known these guys since day-one way back at Prep School,” said Anderson, who’s blog announcement also includes a photo I took of him against Temple. “These are the right guys for the job! Take to go to work and make a statement!”
McNary is an easy decision for captaincy — he is arguably Army’s most dominating impact player and certainly a leader alongside Anderson on defense.
Steve told me last week his knee is doing “a lot better” and that he expected it would further improve with extra time to rest during the bye. Let’s hope everyone is healthy and ready for a key match-up with VMI; a win over the Keydets is most definitely one that Army circled on the calendar in terms of having a bowl game bid this winter.
Game notes for this Saturday against VMI are up (featuring my photo of Mike Gann). West Point/ITT Knight Vision did a GREAT two-piece video feature that follows Gann around post for a day, I would highly encourage you to check those out. It shows the senior waking up on a dark morning, somehow finding a seat among 4,000 other cadets for breakfast and running through his daily schedule of classes, presentations, uniform checks and football practice. Jason Johnson makes a cameo too.
VMI’s game notes (pdf at http://www.vmikeydets.com/pdf8/719125.pdf?DB_OEM_I D=9800 ) say that VMI will be wearing red jerseys and Army will be in “alternate” jerseys on Saturday.
It was earlier announced that the “Dress Grey” uni will be worn against AF. Are we going to see them a week early? Or is some previously unrevealed combination going to be worn? (and did you do any mix-and-match mock-ups back in August?
I can tell you I know what it is, but West Point is keeping it a secret until Saturday, so I’ll leave it at that. It’s not too hard to figure out, though. Steve Anderson tweeted last night “Army fans have a treat in store for them this Saturday” — the players will be pumped, no doubt.
