Suffern right-hander Aviles drafted by Cleveland

A big congrats to Suffern’s Robbie Aviles, drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 MLB Draft earlier today!

Aviles was projected to be a second or third-round pick (he and his family hoped for first-round I think) but after a partially torn elbow ligament last week, his stock dropped and he fell a few rounds to the Cleveland Indians, No. 210 overall.

The question is now whether Aviles will accept considerably less money than he’d anticipated and join the Indians, or opt to keep his commitment to Florida and re-enter the Draft next year when he’ll potentially be healthy.

I spoke to Robbie and did a story about him and his father for MLB.com in April, where he told me he was excited to begin his professional career. That, of course, was when he was pain-free and had his eyes on being selected early.

Either way, it’s great to see a local athlete get drafted, I know a lot of people here in Rockland are very proud.
