Army’s new linebacker

I wish I had some cool Olympic-related photos to post here after the U.S.’s stellar day in Vancouver… but I have nothing. Sorry. If someone wants to hook me up with Olympic credentials, I’m game.

What I do have plenty of, though, are Army football photos, so you’re stuck with that today. Army kicked off it’s spring workout/practice “season” today at West Point (it snowed) and one notable bit of news is that starting fullback Kingsley Ehie will now be a linebacker heading into the 2010 fall season.

Kingsley was one guy I really enjoyed watching in the first half of the 2009 season until he took on more of a blocking role to Pat Mealy. Army head coach Rich Ellerson had some nice things to say about his former running back.

“Kingsley is one of the best, if not the best, athlete on the football team,” Ellerson said Wednesday.  “We’re going to explore Kinglsey in some other venues.”

Apparently Army has a sophomore transfer battling for a fullback job, Jared Hassin, and another back, CeDarius Williams, is returning from an injury. I’ll hit up Kingsley and see what he thinks about the move, but I think he could fit well on defense, would love to see him and Josh McNary putting the heat on some QB’s next fall.

Army used one of my photos today of Mealy for a spring practice story, taken during the cadets’ final home game against Virginia Military Institute.

I’m unfamiliar with Hassin, but he sounds really pumped to get another shot with the Black Knights next season.

“I’ve been a fan of Army Football since I was 4-years-old.,” he said. “My opinions of Army football just grew in the experience. I’m just really happy and really elated to be part of the team.”

Freshman quarterback Trent Steelman (already referred to as a sophomore by Army) took the majority of snaps today in the team’s first spring workout. He led the team in rushing in 2009 so he’s only going to improve.

Weekly updates should provide me an excuse to post some Army football photos this spring, but if you have any specific requests, drop me a note. Until then, I’m going to watch Lindsey Vonn replays on NBC late-night.
