News this weekend that three Army baseball players were selected as Academic All-Americans for 2010. Ben Koenigsfeld and Steve May were named to the District 1 first team, while Zach Price earned a spot on the District 1 second team.

May is the younger brother of Los Angeles Dodgers catching prospect Lucas May, who I wrote about last fall when he played in the Arizona Fall League.

Price is a fun guy to shoot during games, he’s always got a smile or grimace on his face while making a play. Little guy, dirt on the jersey, always in the middle of something. Always digging hard out of the box.

Price leads the team with eight steals. From USMA’s release on this, which features one of my photographs:

Price rounds out the contingent representing Army on the District 1 All-America team. One season after a stunning debut in which he earned Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-America honors, the native of Cantonment, Fla. (J.M. Tate H.S.), appeared to fall victim to the “sophomore jinx” earlier this spring. Price, who batted .355 with a whopping 59 runs scored as Army’s leadoff batter last season, struggled at the plate at the outset of this year. But Price has rebounded nicely since that time, batting .346 with 12 runs scored and 12 runs batted in during his last 20 games.

Also good news, Army (27-15 overall, 16-4 Patriot) will serve as host for one of the Patriot League Tournament’s two best-of-three semifinal series next weekend (May 15-16).

The cadets will face fourth-seeded Bucknell at home on Saturday and, should they take the series, will play at home for the conference championship the following Sunday-Monday.
